Great material with some collection woes
By Andrew S. Michael
The Moench/Jones run of Batman is my absolute favorite run of the character because it was the first to make me understand why Batman struck fear into the hearts of criminals. This is a chilling, macabre, creepy, and unusual Batman. Many of these stories serve as great introductions to the supernatural side of DC. Readers are given interesting looks at how Batman interacts with the haunted and unknown. This volume features stand-out stories of the Swamp Thing and Deadman. Vesper Fairchild is also a great supporting character and provides a great tone to several issues.
The negatives:
This must have been a challenging run for DC to collect as many of Jones's issues are chapters of larger crossovers, that are NOT included in this collection. The books starts with part 1 of the "Troika" cross over that briefly ran through the Bat-Books, but the reader is left without any resolution. Similarly, issue 520 (NOT drawn by Jones) is omitted, even though it is part 3 of a story where Jones drew the first 2 parts. Also missing are the covers that Jones did before in in between the issues collected here. I understand why issues like 520 are omitted, but why not include the Jones cover to 520?
That said, the Moench/Jones chapters are great reads. The Poison Ivy chapter of Contagion that they did was the high-point of that crossover in my opinion.
I really hope there is a volume 2 and beyond. Volume 2 would certainly have to include the fantastic Joker/Etrigan romp as well as the best vision of Ragman that DC has ever put out. Beyond that there are numerous Jones Batman miniseries, covers, and more that could be collected (the bizarre Batman: Dark Joker the Wild deserves a fresh look.)

Naturally the stories are great (hey, it's Doug Moench
By Robert E. Behers
If you missed these Batman tales when they first came out, you are in for an eye popping art version of the Dark Knight! Naturally the stories are great (hey, it's Doug Moench!), but almost all the big bad guys make an apperance, and on top of it all you get the artsy flair of Kelley Jones! Batman as you never pictured him! Large eared menacing figure rising out of the dark of Gotham to take on crime head on. It's a different vision of our beloved hero, and one you will totally enjoy! Nicely reprinted in a hardcover edition, who can ask for more!
