They could be beautiful, whimsical or desolate

This is a poetry collection that pulls the reader into a multitude of worlds. They could be beautiful, whimsical or desolate, but always translate clearly and naturally. With hardly a wasted word, there is a complete experience to be had in each poem. The pieces I enjoyed the most were those that included inanimate objects or robots as living things with real experiences, as genuine emotion and empathy were still strongly at the forefront. My favorites were:
Apunkalypse - A bleak and desolate multi-part piece that displays a deep longing for companionship and to feel the love of another as sanity drips away.
The Girl With Ice Cream Eyes - Charming and eccentric, a tribute to a being so engaging and desirable, yet ultimately forbidden and deceiving.
My Life Inside As a Sad Trombone - Much like a very short roller coaster with the words being the ups and downs. Nicely done.
Darko/Baso - Dystopia used as a catalyst displaying profound beauty even as bleak destruction surrounds you.
Janken Brothers - Post apocalypse survival where rock, paper, scissors, and angel are your final monstrous enemies.
I Will Split Your Body In Two - A love tale like no other. To never tolerate or allow losing the other half of your love life means all parts must be present for the full experience.
I am definitely familiar with Cartledge’s other books and have seen his growth from the NBAS book, “House Hunter,” to the surreal “Day of the Milkman” and his story “Wizard and Robot In the Land of Sand and Bones” from “Four Gentemen of the Apocalypse.” This collection showcases another side of his talent that warrants your attention.

A lyrical whirlwind

In each of S.E. Cartledge’s Beautiful Madness poems, it’s almost as though we’re in a new alternate history within a single mind, whimsical worlds painted in flashes of evocative imagery. It’s a lyrical whirlwind that’s as emotionally bombastic as it is flourishing in the creativity of an inspired madness that’s both breathtaking and a blast to suck in. Here’s four passages I really enjoyed:
From “Electric Revolution”:
We learned to dream on machines
made by other people
We learned to love the buzz,
the hum, the waking up
of virtual beings shining
through to us and making our
own world brighter, more sprightly, more fun
From “When Everything Has Moved:”
Every stone has its story,
piling up, construction and deconstruction.
Histories of contradictions rendered meaningless
by the hour.
From “Sunshine Kids Dance on Islands Made From Dragonberries.”
The silhouettes of sunshine kids
dance in the sand from the flames
on the islands made from dragonberries
and I forget about the world
beyond the ocean
This is the only world I have ever known.
From “The God-Like Blue Ringed Octopus In You:”
What gods would dye your skin
so blue, what giant ocean-dwelling gods
would terraform the sky, to float
a kingdom of blue rings
cast down on buildings
which gothic form reflections
bent and swallowed by
non-euclidean shapes

Rejoice!

A beautiful and haunting chapbook-sized collection of poetry that manages to be both terse and full. Cartledge’s ability really shines when he’s chewing the scenery, creating fireworks with a few well-placed words. And in that gaping wound is where he injects the heart; the soul of each poem, festering in the bloody gaps.
I really enjoyed this collection. I’ve read both this collection as well as a novella and another collection by S. T. Cartledge, and I must say, his use of description and language never ceases to delight me. Fans of poetry, rejoice. Your craft is not dead.
