About the Author

Thomas Limoncelli is a world-famous author and speaker on many topics including system administration, networking, and security. A system administrator since 1988, he now speaks at conferences around the world on topics ranging from firewall security to time management. He has worked for Cibernet, Dean For America, Lumeta, Bell Labs / Lucent, AT&T and Mentor Graphics. Along with Christine Hogan he is co-author of the book "The Practice of System and Network Administration" from Addison-Wesley. He holds a B.A. in C.S. from Drew University, Madison, New Jersey, USA. Tom explains WHY, and leads you towards HOW!

I attended an eponymous presentation given by the author. Tom is a good presenter and a good writer and the sort of smart-but-easy-going guy you would want to work with. The whole idea of "time management" is especially important for systems administrators, who tend to juggle a lot of things at once while also handling user interruptions, and reporting to diffuse layers of management.

Tom does an excellent job of describing the problems of getting things done and managing customer expectations effectively, and explains various processes that one can adopt to improve on that. He emphasizes that it is a long-term, bit-by-bit process where you give different self-management methodologies a shot, and then as you find things that work, you expand the domain of your self-time-management to be more effective not merely in the field of Systems Administration, but life-in-general.

I myself am still experimenting with various daily regimens and have yet to find a system that works really well for me . . . but if Tom hadn't gotten into my head the importance of time management, I would still be spinning my wheels in ignorance as to how one might go about being more effective.

I dug this book so much that I gave it as a "starting day" gift when we hired our second SysAdmin. Tom was gracious enough to sign that copy--thanks, Tom!

Valuable Guide for System Administrators

Tom Limoncelli is a well-known system administrator, author and orator. He speaks at conferences around the globe on issues ranging from firewall security to time management. He has also published papers at conferences such as the Usenix LISA on a wide variety of topics including innovative firewall techniques, coordinating massive network changes, models for improving customer support, and the security issues related to firing your system administrator.

I like the book "Time Management for System Administrators" because it is written BY system administrator FOR system administrators.

The book covers not only the general time management principles, but also valuable advices for system administrators: how to make use of automation, how to cope with multiple customers, bosses and tasks, and so on.

In addition to this book, I can recommend the other great titles that I liked much: "Never Check E-Mail In the Morning" by Julie Morgenstern, "Getting Things Done" by David Allen and "Time Drive" by Gleb Arkhangelsky.

Quickly to the point and chock full of helpful practices

Limoncelli knows the life of a sysadmin and it shows in his no nonsense approach to helping us out with our lives. From practical techniques to quaint semi-mythical annecdotes the entire book seems to bring the insurmountable problem of Time Management down into the realm of quickly grasped and dealt with topics. Limoncelli doesn't make promises about a 10 minute fix, but in fact does quiet the opposite and is frank about the fact that you may spend months or years mastering these techniques. The book is filled with cut to the chase information and tactics for dealing with the Time Management problems that surround most sysadmins. Although not all of the advice is universally applicable you can always see where it would be useful to someone in a different field or job. In all a solid book well worth the short time it will take to read it.

Too short for the price but a great read.

Wonderful story but for the price I expected more than a pamphlet or short story. I would have given it 5 stars had it been .99 cents or longer. It was a great beginning and would have made an amazing tale had the author fleshed it out more. I am a huge fan of the 3013 series and thought I'd give this a try. As usual I loved Ms. Hayes characters but I will pay more attention to the page count from now on.

Charming & Surprisingly Tender for So Short a Tale

I LOVED this. Fast, easy, *fun* read with a dash of tenderness.

A fae-cat shapeshifter is captured to breed an heir. Her intended husband turns out to be nothing like his father, who arranged the "match" (not a spoiler — that's in the very beginning).

I loved reading how the couple earned each other's trust and respect among other things. Intimate scenes were well done and not gratuitous - just right. I actually found this believable, which is a stretch with short erotic books. Well done! I might re-read — I enjoyed it so much.

I've already read and reviewed the second, "Summoned and Stolen." All I can say is, "Please write a third!?"

It was just starting to get interesting when it finished! Beginning, end but no middle. No story development. Pity. I hope the series improves cause it's an interesting concept.

One hell of a first novel: not for the weak at heart!

This book grabbed me by the throat by about chapter three or four and wouldn't let go. There are books that matter to me because the language captures me and I want to read aloud the phrases I love most...there are books that matter to me because I can't put them down...and there are books that matter to me because they make me feel lost in the world they create. This one was all three. I was so deeply entrenched that when I got to an upsetting part (it's horror meets dark fantasy) I was literally furious with the author for maybe a day until I was removed enough to remember that it is FICTION and that nothing bad had actually happened. To me, that's quite an artistic accomplishment! This is the first in a trilogy and I can't wait for the next two.

Soolie Beetch and the Dying Light is enthralling, engaging and impossible to put down. I had to read it twice, once just because I could not sleep without finding out what happens next, and the second to really let myself sink into the amazing story. This book is fantasy-fiction at it's very finest. The world is exquisitely crafted, and yet the characters are heartbreakingly real in every sense. It is everything I want in a book; intense, sweet, sad, funny, horrifying, and an escape. Not for the faint of heart (things gets *dark*) this book is a superb first novel, and I honestly don't know if I can wait for the series to continue.

Worth it, want more!

As a avid reader, I go through a lot of books over the course of the year. This book is a stand out. Imaginative with great descriptions the writer gave me characters I felt I could relate to and care about, a rarity. Soolie is strong and trying to protect those she loves while trying to survive. The world the author has created is described in such a way I had no trouble seeing it and being there, with none of the jarring inconsistencies some other popular authors through out because they didn't take the time to research their devices to find out if it would really work like that or not. Recommended.

Fun and Useful

This is a fun little book. Life Hacks contains brief articles arranged topically. There are time saving ideas, health saving ideas (like the clothespin on the front cover which is used to hold the nail so as to not crush one's thumb) and ideas to get the most out of life. Nothing here is overly complicated and nothing here requires anything outside everyday household items. Thus the hacks in the book are practical and useful.

Life Hacks is a great bathroom book, a good coffee table book and would be an excellent book to place in waiting rooms. You will enjoy reading and probably take away at least a couple of hacks to make your life better.

2nd Printing MUCH CHEAPER than this 1st Printing

I have purchased the same(7th) edition of this title and found it to be very helpful. I have traveled and lived in several countries and once considered marrying a woman from another country as well. The many questions and assumptions regarding citizenship, residence and passports is brought into focus in the first part of the book. The latter part has a very extensive list of countries and their own policies and procedures for obtaining residence or a passport. The list is not complete, however, and may disappoint someone who has a very specific foreign country in mind. I would recommend most purchase the Second Printing of this same edition at a much lower cost (approx. $50-$60) which is also available here on Amazon. It is distributed from the Sovereign Society where Mr. Bauman works as a Legal counsel and writing contributor.

Very Cool, But Not Earth Shattering

This book is packed with grappling techniques that have proven their worth in MMA. Best of all, a range of excellent MMAists and MMA trainers show the little wrinkles and setups they use to make the techniques work. Anyone with any kind of grappling experience knows that the devil is in the details, and finding one or two small tips to tighten a technique can make all the difference in the world.

However, as solid as this information is, there's not a lot new here for someone who is an intermediate or above level grappler already. There are no "game changing" concepts or positions. All you need to do is look at the contributors list: Jon Fitch, Greg Jackson, Forrest Griffin, and Randy Couture are all great, but they aren't exactly Marcelo Garcia, Dean Lister, Robert Drysdale and Andre Galvao. Perhaps this book should have been called "MMA Grappling."

If you are new to grappling or primarily interested in MMA, this book is a gold mine. If you are experienced and primarily interested in straight grappling/ BJJ, it might still be worth a pick up, but I would advise you to look through it at a book store before deciding it's worth it for you.

On a complete side note, what's with the duct tape/ ransom note thing? It probably confirms that the books target audience is kids who are just getting into grappling.

Your typical "all-star" instructional

Did not have high expectations, ordered this book because it was on sale.

What you get is techniques from various MMA fighters; covering basic positions (mount, guard, north-south etc.) There aren't any flashy techniques and the book layout is nice, making the presented ones easy to understand.

I have been wrestling/grappling for more than 10 years and I wasn't expecting to learn anything new; what I did get was a reminder that I could bring back a couple of techniques from this book to my repertoaire.

This is one of those books you should get if it is on clearance and go thru it to refresh you memory.

About the Author

Working out of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia, Adam Phillips is an independent animation professional, creator of the Brackenwood series, and publisher of Bitey Castle. Through his website, bitey.com, Adam hosts tutorials and courses in animation, 2D special FX, Flash, and Toon Boom animation software. Adam worked as an animator and effects supervisor with DisneyToon Studios, Australia for eleven years before going independent to concentrate on his popular internet series, Brackenwood. Independent now for over a decade, his showreel spans a huge range of personal and professional projects including illustrations, comics, short stories, album covers, music videos, animation and game cinematics, for clients such as Ween, Kellogg’s, Riot Games, BioWare San Francisco, Rumble Games (KingsRoad), Wizards of the Coast (Dungeons and Dragons), and Bento Box (Bob’s Burgers).

Just what I was looking for

Pros:
I am so appreciative of this book. I have waited quite a while for this to be made available. I have owned Toonboom Harmony for a year now and for the most part I have had to rely on the application User Guide and video tutorials. But this book has more of a personal feel to it. He goes over practical things that an artist would use everyday. The book is not high on tech speak which is good. Just teaching you how to work the application.

If you ever visit the author's site he is very humorous and the book is no different. Just a relaxing read where you are getting things done. I enjoy specialized books such as this that teach me how to become more efficient with my software. Teaching you techniques where the application functions become just another extension of yourself. Very natural.

Cons:
Unfortunately before the release of this book Harmony moved from 10.3 to 11 which has more features. But the base knowledge to get one going is still very prevalent.

The next Con is the 3D capability. I simply CANNOT find solid tutorial material on the hybrid functionality of 2D/3D in Harmony. The manual and video tutorials provided by the company are very sterile. Not interesting at all. I had hoped to find that in this book, but no. The hybrid functionality seems to be highly sought after and Harmony is one of the few apps on the market that offers that feature. But, you cannot find anyone that is an expert that teaches it.

Other than those issues this book is more than work purchasing. Such a needed source for Toonboom customers.

Only Book Worth Reading on Toon Boom

This book is incredible! If you have any interest in learning or advancing you skillsets in Toon Boom, this is THE book. I have been trying to learn Toon Boom for a proof of concept cartoon due to the dying use of Flash animation. Tried to just jump into it because of knowing Flash and it was a massive learning curve. Like, Toon Boom slapped me upside the head so I tried learning from their tutorials and YouTube videos which still flicked me in the head. Then I bought this on a whim and it has been perfect. This book is so well structured that it walks you through the entirety of what can be done in Toon Boom. Simply brilliant.

Take My Money

Best introduction to Toonboom Pro for me. I was terrified switching from Studio to Pro and had no idea where all my beloved features went to, or how to activate the new features that interested me in Pro. I do not feel this went into enough details on the effects ToonBoom Pro has to offer using the Network, or how to set up riggings beyond the simple overall body(would have loved to learn about setting up a face rig and storing library templates for different facial pieces, but maybe next book ;) ). On the other hand though, I really loved this book. I would suggest it for anyone who is just getting animate, pro, or harmony from an upgrade or switching from flash or tvpaint to toonboom. It is an excellent resource,a monster when it comes to how much tips and tricks is crammed in, and holds you by the hand with wit and humor, guiding the path for first starters to teach Toonboom features fast. This book is not a complete "how to" for animation unfortunately. There are many theories still missing from it, and more indepth rigging like the rigging for more complex features, filters, and for many other special effects. I can understand though why it wouldn't be in this book(it is already a big book already). Though, If another book were to come out for these topics in Toonboom, I would buy it in a heart beat.
