Pamela Clare wrote some of my all- time favorite historical romances. ("Carnal Gift", "Sweet Release", and "Ride the Fire", are one series. "Surrender" is the first in another series about 3 brothers... we're still waiting for the sequels.) One of the things I always loved most about Clare's writing is her hero characters. They are written to be strong, devoted, passionate, and willing to sacrifice everything for their women. The hero in "Extreme Exposure" is the same kind of man.

Reece is a Colorado state senator. He is intrigued by a daring female journalist who is known for going to the limit to get the truth for her articles. On a few occasions, Kara has interviewed Reese over the phone. The first time they meet in person, Reece knows he wants to have time to get to know her better. Kara is an overwhelmed single mom with a full time career and a bad history with men. She is determined not to get involved with a senator who seems too good to be true. Reece doesn't mind putting a lot of effort into changing her mind. He feels both she and her son, Connor, are worth it. He wants to be the man Kara needs, and the father figure Connor so yearns for.

Kara is investigating a cement company who has been poisoning the local environment. The billionaire company owner wants her out of the way. He threatens Kara with death if she continues to dig into his company's health department records. When she refuses to back off, her home is invaded and she is nearly murdered. Reece wants to know who is threatening her. Kara won't expose her sources. Reece has no choice but to begin an investigation of his own. Now both Reece and Kara are targets. They discover that by working as a team, they can find the answers they need. Kara is still reluctant about getting personally involved, but Reece will not give up on her. He'll risk his career and even his very life to save her.

The writing is so good in this tale, I was holding my breath at times. This story has so much more to it than a basic romance novel. The action scenes are intense. The romance is super steamy with ultra yummy love scenes. Reece is a dream hero. The plot thickens as you go, with surprises at the end.

I liked Kara's character as well, although not as much. She is strong, independent, determined, honest, and a devoted mom. My only problem with her was the length of time it took her to accept to Reece. About 3/4 of the way through the book, she is still pushing him away. It got to the point that I felt she didn't deserve Reece's undying affection. For weeks he gave her all of himself, she would only give him sex in return. Finally, at chapter 25 (over 275 pages into the book) her icy armor breaks away for good. From that point, she's extraordinarily dedicated to Reece, even risking her life to save him. I liked her more and more throughout the rest of the story.

Hands Down, the Best Contemporary Ever

That's my opinion and I am sticking to it. EXTREME EXPOSURE is the first book I've read by Pamela Clare. I have never been more pleased with a contemporary romance. Let's just say that if more contemporary romances out there were as well written as this one, I might never read any other Romance genre again. Pamela Clare delivers to readers a funny, fast-paced, suspensful and heart-wrenching read all in one. We get very well-developed characters, thrills, chills, lots of bedroom action and enough romance to fill up an entire lifetime.

Kara McMillan is a dedicated investigative journalist, full-time single mom and a past heartbreak survivor. Through the well-meaning help of a good friend and coworker, she's back on the singles scene in Denver, Colorado, putting her dignity on the line once again in order to find a man. Not really wanting to be left dangling in the breeze like a worm on the hook, she's about ready to call it quits when in walks the sexiest man to ever walk the planet. That would be Senator Reece Sheridan, the consummate, the ultimate MAN. She's conducted phone interviews with him before, and he was instantly intrigued by her sexy voice. So it's no surprise when they hit it off. Thanks to her good friend abandoning her on the spot, she has to depend on the generous spirit of the senator to take her home. Poor Kara....I only wish it had been me! Readers are quickly wisked into their whirlwind relationship as Kara begins investigationg a local mining operation thanks to the tip of an anonymous source. What follows is the stuff made of political scandal legends: mystery, intrigue, murder and justice. No one can put a scandal of this magnitude to newspaper justice like Kara. She's literally a force to be reckoned with.

A gutsy journalist deserves nothing less than a hero like Reece Sheridan. I cannot say enough what a drool-worthy speciman of a man he is. What woman wouldn't want a smart, handsome, sexy dedicated lover like the senator? He falls for Kara and puts nothing less than one hundred and fifty percent of himself into their relationship. Plus, he's a politician in it literally for the good of the people! Can it get any better? Yes, it can!! He also happens to be a knight in shining armor, so read the book and see what I mean!

Clare has actually taken the time to write a detailed story with characters that carry us through it at the speed of light. We don't just get a minor reference to the political intrigue in this one. It's more than a backdrop, it's an integral part of the book. I don't think Kara or Reece would have been such deep characters without it. Three cheers, no ten cheers for Pamela Clare's EXTREME EXPOSURE! It's truly a book worthy of the exclusive keeper shelf.

Extreme Exposure=Extreme Heat

Pamela Clare, the brightest star in romance has outdone herself with her new contemprary book Extreme Exposure. Kara, an investigative reporter is on the case of a huge company trashing the environment with toxic waste dump. Her investigation will lead to politicans and other people who wants to stop her are out to get her at any cost, even death. Senator Reece Sheridan is single, sexy, and extremely handsome. He meets Kara on the first chapter, and has a very naughty conversation with her. This leads to instant attraction and chemistry. Unlike other senators Reece is dedicated to his work and improving the government. There are no sex scandals with any interns for this senator, the only sex and scandals he has is with Kara. Ms. Pamela Clare has certainly used her on career as an investigator reporter to good use. The authenticity of how Kara went about her job is real. But this is only have of the story. The action half.

The romance part of the story is to die for. As I said from the beginning of the book starting with the hot, sweaty conversation that Reece has with Kara to the last page, it is filled with sexual tension. Reece is such a powerful, loving, sexual hero. Not only is he a good lover he is also an excellent father to Kara's little son. This is the type of man any woman would want. There is a very humorous scene involving Kara's son and a certain toy. Numerous flaming hot scenes involving Kara and Reece showing their love and the lust. Just be prepared to have plenty of towels to wipe off the sweat and something cool handy. This book is that good.

Nowadays we have too many romance books that aren't even romance anymore. Extreme Exposure is the kind of old fashion straight romance that I feel we have been missing for a long time. Thank you Ms. Pamela Clare for writing romance the way it should be written.

make the best with what we got

I could not have picked a better novel with the airing of Downton Abbey (season 5). Just the perfect message to start the new year. Many people have been recommending me this beautiful novel as one of their favorite and definitely, it has reached that special place.

"The Remains of the Day" presents the personal account of an English butler, Stevens, after WWII, who has reached the fading phase of his career. Stevens relates his most memorable moments of his profession before the war with nostalgia yet with pride.

The narrative is multilayered as Stevens revisit his past during a short trip he undertakes to the English country. The nature description of the country along with his remembrance, even with no apparent transition, forms a well compact and linear narrative, making it lyrical. For an instance, it reminded me a little of "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" and "The Emigrants".The timeline stretches up to 6 days and, therefore, it is a short, quick read but profound.

Stevens explanation of what being an English butler really means is outstanding and full of wisdom. The emphasis of professionalism and how his duty of service is a vocation made me revisit my work experience and depicts my mistakes. All the lessons Stevens shared are lessons that are applicable in whatever field of career one may be.

The importance of "emotional restraint" (p.44) and how maintaining our "dignity" (p.45) at all times are virtues that should be part of our professional values. Stevens expertly demonstrates all the different manners in which dignity should be practiced. We also encountered a debate on the different definitions of dignity.

Another aspect that I greatly enjoyed was the importance of small acts or what we may say, which could produce a series of unforeseen events. Stevens is cautious, loyal and unexpectedly sensible. However, he also shed lights on his shortcomings for not having a balanced life and for not being more conscious, at the time, nor being more assertive in mistakes his employer committed. His strong focus on his duty of service and loyalty to Lord Darlington veiled his judgements rendering him indifferent, even an accomplice, in a way, of what was happening around him. As a watched the movie directed by James Ivory (1993), afterwords, the scope of his mistakes are more evident. Stevens was portrayed as annoying and he was easy to dislike. I was completely enraptured by his work ethics when I was reading the book.

Stevens will be one of those characters I will be thinking often along the year. I can definitely see myself re-reading this novel. I enjoyed it very much. I so wished it was longer. I recommend the audio which was narrated by one of my favorite narrator, Simon Pebble. I discovered him when I read "1984" by George Orwell.

Had to read it for class, would read again

This was one out of 3 novels I had to read for a Critical Theory English class in college. When I received the reading list, this seemed like the novel I would like the least. I was wrong. It is slow to start and slow to get interesting, but the pace of the book is pretty steady. The other two novels were Mrs Dalloway (which I had read before) and The Moonstone. Remains of the Day tied with The Moonstone in terms of books that I would read again. Toward the end of the class I had to choose between writing an easy essay on Mrs Dalloway or over Remains of the Day (which I was behind on the scheduled reading) and instead of taking the easy way, I finish this book in one night.
If you like books that are steady and may or may not have an unreliable narrator and characters, give this one a try. Ishiguro is a fantastic writer. Even if you do not like the characters or the plot, the writing and the author's voice is still great.

A Novel for the Pauser

I find that it is difficult to recommend “Remains” to people. To give an example: I do think a friend of mine would enjoy it, but I doubt he would get through the first two chapters before putting it down for good, as I know him not to stick with things if there is no immediate pay off.

“Remains” gives you very little, you have to do a lot for yourself; most of the main character's (Stevens) development is in the head of the reader, hence the title of my review. I found myself doing that hideously pretentious thing of lowering my kindle and look (thoughtfully) into the distance far too often during the reading, and still most of it only fell into place after finishing. A lot will depend on the reader's view on the ethics of intent and consequence.

I enjoy that, the wrestling with a thought or opinion until it makes sense. It is not dissimilar to the satisfaction of solving an equation.

The novel is written in first person and the reader have to sift everything Stevens says, not because he is lying to us, but because he is throughout the book struggling to reconcile the public view of his former employer with his own memories and opinions. Additionally he is troubled by the memories of the housekeeper from that time, with whom he now realises he might have had a future with.

In short; read it, it might be a novel for you.

It may have a new Copyright date but it has old information. Take for instance, Chapter 5. Here's a quote ... Bond fund assets have grown from just $4 Billion in 1970 ... to $510 Billion at the end of 1992. Or how about Figure 6-2 in Chapter 6 that shows Money Market yields from 1983-1992. It doesn't appear that any information was updated past 1992 values. The 2015 Introduction goes into how "Bogle on Mutual Funds Became a Classic". Great! Congrats to the author and Wiley Publications. But I'm pretty sure you could get the same info from the old version. I don't own the old version but it kind of looks like I do - other than the intro and a copyright date. Really a disappointment.

Simple but brilliantly concepts

I first became interested in this title because of the positive review by Warren Buffett. There's so much hype in the investing field that you'll save hundreds of hours of wasted time and thousands of dollars in lost money by consulting a genius to separate the wheat from the chaff. It's not always an exciting, easy read but it's essential knowledge if you're investing or planning to invest in funds. Its simple concepts that take some mental work to understand. Those that make big money in individual stock investing normally invest a tremendous amount of time understanding their field AND the particular companies they're risking their money on. If you don't have the time or inclination to do this, mutual funds are one safe way to go.

For my money, your number one investment is in becoming valuable in whatever field you have a passion for. After enough money starts flowing and you want a relatively safe approach to investing and compounding excess funds (above what you need for a comfortable--not extravagant--lifestyle), Bogle explains the simple concepts for compounding your money over time. Don't take my word for it. Read the back page of the book for the brilliant investing minds that have given Bogle's ideas their stamp of approval.

What a nice surprise

I wasn't sure what I was getting when I ordered this book. My initial thoughts were that this might be helful in managing our heart failure patients. After all chronic disease is chronic disease. I got so much more then I bargained for. "The Art of Empowerment: Stories and Strategies for the Daibetes Educators" is more then a book with the hows and the whys; it is a journey. One that encompases self-reflection and the willingness to take a good hard look at your existing belief system. The authors artfully walk you through how they developed their philosophy of empowerment. That empowerment for both the educator and patient come from the concepts of freedom and responsibility. "Because we are free to make choices, we are responsible for the consequences of out choices". The book is rich with stories from nurses, educators, psychologists and physicians who have taken the steps through self-reflection to create a vision. What is our purpose as diabetes educators? Each charpter is design to provide you with tools and exercises that will help you with the process of self-reflection. Empowerment is a vision or a philosophy of giving care, the vision comes before the method and the vison comes through self-reflection. Coincidently, while reading this book, I was doing some work with one of the NPs at our hospital who manages the diabetes clinic. It was amazing to me to actually see the many opportunites to use this strategy as we saw patients over the past two weeks. My NP has asked if she could borrow my book when I am done. I have decided to buy her a copy of her own.

"The Net & the Butterfly" far exceeded my expectations - it works wonders for breakthroughs in personal relationships

As a psychotherapist and coach, "The Net & the Butterfly" was put to immediate use with a highly successful in business client who was unfortunately highly unsuccessful in personal relationships. I had not yet finished reading the last pages of "The Net and the Butterfly" when I recommended an exercise from the 'Butterfly Repellant' chapter - it has many simple exercises that create an amazing paradigm shift in self image. One exercise enabled my client to separate from an established identity that had been destroying relationships to establishing brillant new connections. This book has many exercises that far exceeded my expectations.

Breakthoughs aren't just for Einsteins

This brilliant, inspiring, and fascinating book is a must read. I have spent hours, days, weeks, and even, gulp, months focusing all my attention on a creative problem only to feel farther and farther away from the answer and more and more frustrated. The Net and the Butterfly has taught me to stop trying so hard to "figure out" the answer. And instead, go wash the dishes or walk the dogs or take a much needed snooze and allow another, wiser part of my brain to take over the heavy lifting. In so doing, I'm allowing breakthroughs to happen without trying to force them (and without driving myself and my friends crazy). Does it work? Oh, yes it does. And, I'm so grateful. Judah Pollack and Olivia Fox Cabane have reminded me and taught me that breakthroughs are not just for the Einsteins, but also for those of us just trying to offer our own unique gifts to the world. Well done.

Must read for anyone in need of creativity or innovation

This book breaks down in very clear language how the brain solves problems and comes up with new ideas - and unlike most books - it walks you through how to train your brain to do these things. And if that weren't enough - it is really fun to read.

So many books today have one fairly simple idea and a handful of good examples to back it up. The Net and the Butterfly has a great example on almost every page. Books like The Power of Habit and Moonwalking with Einstein are amazing in their own right - but this book takes some of the concepts in those books to a whole new level. Just the idea of the "DN" Default Network and how your brain works when you are not actively working on an idea, problem, or opportunity, puts things in such clear terms it's refreshing. I can think of entire departments in companies that should read this.

In terms of who specifically should read this - it's a pretty long list from the most experienced CEO and CTO to the most junior person in marketing. The book is so well written and there are so many great examples from Chuck Yeager's intuition that he would break the sound barrier to the way Einstein got to his theory of relativity after collaborating with what amounted to a drinking buddy.

Such Wit

Like many reviewers I begin by noting Congreve is not Shakespeare. But he has nearly as much splendor and resonance, in a narrower vein, perhaps, but not less wonderful than much that the Bard wrote. 'Love for Love' is witty, urbane and silky smooth. The characters are stiffer than Shakespeare's, but Congreve writes to different conventions and uses them to reach us, his readers or viewers, more personally than one would think possible. Congreve reaches brilliant heights of humor and language. As usual, this Penguin edition is good quality and good value. If you know Congreve through other works, this is the writer at his best.... Enjoy.

For those who have ignored Elliott Waves, this book will allow you to easily gain useable trading tools.

Bennett McDowell’s Elliott Wave Techniques Simplified, took me from being a total novice to becoming an Elliott enthusiast and to looking for Elliott Waves and Fibonacci sequences everywhere.

Bennett begins with Elliott’s biography. This provides a clear understanding of Elliott’s observational, analytical, restructuring and organizational skills that made him a much sought after high-level business consultant and that led to his work and publications on wave principles.

In Chapter 2, Bennett enumerates the psychological factors that create movement in the markets. Using examples, exercises and visual aids, he carries this beyond theory and has convinced me of this chapter’s importance.

Elliott’s 1938 classic wave theory rules are clearly presented with illustrations in Chapter 3. Bennett concludes this chapter with two valuable summaries worth printing out: “McDowell’s Elliott Wave Guidelines” and “Elliott Wave Statistics For All Five Waves.”

The Fibonacci series, its relationship to Elliott Wave theory and application to trading are well presented in Chapter 4. As throughout this book, Bennett provides the “take home and use” information that does not require high level math skills.

Whether you are using indicators readily available on charting software or the proprietary A.R.T. software indicators, Chapters 5, 6 and 7 provide the additional information needed to implement these trading techniques.

In Chapter 6, Bennett presents “The Best of Both Worlds” by combining classic Elliott Wave analysis with his “McDowell Probability Matrix.” He continues in Chapter 7 with information on using the Matrix to “Trust and Verify Signals.”

“My Favorite Trade Setups” in Chapter 8 are presented in a very clear, step-by-step fashion.

In Chapter 9, “A Student’s Perspective,” Dean Jenkins of FollowMeTrades.com relates his compelling story of how his emotions caused him a large loss in the fall of 2000. Dean continues the chapter with much of the knowledge that he has gained since then. (“Good judgment is the result of experience and experience the result of bad judgment.” - Mark Twain)

For those who have ignored Elliott Waves believing this technique to be out dated or too difficult, this book will allow you to easily gain useable information that remains pertinent today.
