Not what I expected

The social work practicum is likely to be required for any senior BSW student, so there's no getting out of buying it. However, I have not found it particularly stimulating; the chapters are short, which is nice, but it is more informative about the internship process than educational on how to practice social work. To its credit, as an information source for the way the internship, the book is written in a very easy-to-read sort of manner.

Not worth the money. Similar to a middle school work book. It may be helpful for individuals who are completely new to the field of SW. Would not recommend otherwise.

The online practices that come with the brand new book are also unhelpful and seem to be geared to individuals who have no understanding or are not familiar with the practice of social work.

This book provides an excellent methodical walkthrough for those that want to write client-server programs using C++ and the Boost library. Both have a steep learning curve, yet this book introduces the building blocks and iteratively builds functioning components in a way that is logical and easy to understand and implement immediately.

I really enjoyed reading and learning from this book and highly recommend it.

p.s. my only comment is that I would have liked the book to have a section about testing the networking implementations using the Boost's support for unit and integration testing. Maybe for the second edition :)

Great Cookbook for Boost Asio C++ Network Programming

The Boost library is really well laid out and really great for starting up a project quickly, however it takes time to get used to it and learn the ins and outs. I highly recommend this cookbook once you get your feet wet with networked communications between clients and servers. This cookbook delivers and the author knows the library rather well, and the best part is the code from the book works! Highly recommend this book.

If you are relatively new to PhotoShop and are looking for a quick, relatively easy intro to B&W photo restoration, this isn't a bad little book. I wanted to love it, but I can't.

Pros: Deals with the basic tools and walks you through the process of using them to fix some problems. Easy to refer to the examples and apply to your scans. Short and easy to use. Inexpensive.
Cons: The printing is on uncoated paper so the example photos aren't always clear. The writing is sub par. No editing was done. The instructions were a little muddled in a couple of the examples. Doesn't address facial restoration if there is a lot of damage. One of his examples shows a family photo, with a big area of damage and he completely ignores how to repair that. Instead he focuses on blurring the background. It cries for information about how he repaired the faces and clothing of the damaged people, but he says not a word except that it will require a lot of work. (See photo of page from book.)

As a quick intro to see if you want to take on the task of repairing family heirlooms, this is a decent place to start. You won't be overwhelmed by all of the tools and choices PhotoShop provides. It's a painless beginning.

I recommend: Photo Restoration—From Snapshots to Great Shots by Robert Correll as the next step to increasing your skills.
Well written (even funny in places), easy to follow, addresses color as well as B&W. Yet not intimidating or overwhelming if you follow along the steps and examples of what he did to repair & improve the photos.

The Bible of photo restoration is: CTEIN's Digital Restoration From Start to Finish. Though it's getting a bit dated. It's an excellent advanced book.

The Most Important Book For Women to Read

In 1989, I had the "opportunity" to be around family more than I had been in my adult years. And it was with the help of this book that I learned to accept my mother, while I still owned every painful emotion that I experienced in her presence.
It was after one of those phone calls where if you are a woman you may be familiar. I just couldn't seem to get the connection that I desired from my mother. And I didn't know how to language the problem, so that I am free to live my own life.
It was after that telephone call, in 1989, that I bought this book, and have read this book many times since then.
The first wonderful experience that I had, as I read this book was the realization that my mother did the best that she knew how to do. That acceptance created a level of peace within myself, because it freed me to stop looking for the perfect mother.
You will learn from reading this book, that your mother really is your first mirror. And by reading this book, by facing your first mirror, in a psychic way, you will give yourself, and your mother permission to be separate, lovable, empowered women.
This book also is great for helping women to treat one another better. Because although we have more opportunities, women still hold one another back in the worst of ways - many women still believe that our opportunities are limited, and that if a woman is successful, she is taking all the power away from other women.
Read this book to love yourself.

Re-read and appreciated MUCH more after 10 years!

I read this title when it was first published and at that time my motivation was in trying to understand my own ambivalent feelings about my mother. Today I finished it in search of trying to understand my twenty year old daughter. This title has helped me on both ends.
First my own mother was never what I preceived she should be, I had my mental image that she did not live up to, and as a teenager, like most, I was very critical of her. This as noted in the title is about healthy separation. Most daughters when they come to learn they really can fly on their own can and do return to a grown up healthy mother-daughter relationship.
Of course, my mind was that I would never let my daughter feel the void I felt with my own mother. I was affectionate, supportive and present for my daughter. My mother of course was not these things in my view. I believe that I raised my daughter much differently than I was raised by my own mother. I have no recall of long conversations, hugs, kisses or tender times with my own mother. I do however have many memories of these times with my own daughter. From the book and from my own personal experience I have learned, it really made little difference. My daughter would do what she wanted, how she wanted in her own way to self identity. Also from this book often the separation is harder and harsher for the closer mother-daughter bond.
This title was ahead of its time when I first read it, all the women's groups were recommending it. All these years later I have to say it has stood the test of time.
Need to understand the mother-daughter bond better? Then this IS the book to buy!

If you buy self development books, this should be your 1st!

I've had this book since it first came out, and have read it several times. I read it every couple of years because I have found that I get something different out of it each time. It is the most powerful book on self development I have in my library. Maggie Scarf " Unfinished Bussiness" is the second.
If you were to have only one book of this kind in your life, "My Mother, My Self" is the one.
Nancy Friday is a thorough researcher and an excellent definer of the complex language of psychology. She is clear & concise for all reading levels from high school on. Reading this book does take time, since her research is so revealing and often heavy. Be prepared for shocking subject matter.
This book has served me very well over the years as it will anyone else who reads it.

Switch-Mode Power Supplies by Basso Book Review

This book is far more detailed than its predecessor and as the author has promised, it took care the majority of complaints. It is difficult to write any book about this subject that would satisfy everybody. You have to look at it with an open mind. It is not meant as a replacement for academia, it is meant to be a practical design guide for circuit simulations as the title suggests. I am happy with the increased content and I believe that anybody who has analog design basics but not very strong simulation skills will definitely benefit from reading the book and learning a number of very useful simulation tricks as I had benefited from the book's predecessor too. Highly recommended both for entry and medium skill level readers. It can also serve as a library of simulation guide for the well educated in this subject. Do not expect this book to show you how to design a switching power supply, you get the practical aspects of how to from the Pressman books. The purpose of this book is to teach you how to simulate switching power supplies using the various versions of SPICE which it does very well. In addition it has a nice summary of academic introductions to various switching power supply modeling techniques and guides you through how various well known individuals had advanced simulation models.

Great book

I read this book for the first time and it was greek and latin to me. The second chapter was the small signal modeling which is probably hardest in power electronics. Lot of equations in chapter 2. I mean it. This book is for people who have used the network analyzer for measuring the feedback loop gain and phase atleast once in their lifetime. If one has used it then it would be easy to understand this book. I read this book for the second time by putting multisim simulator in front of me and it did really make sense. Then moved on to 3rd and 4th chapters : feedback loop design ( not complete enough to describe the feedback loop ) but made sense. I loved this book after that. Have patience while reading it would definitely give you a better impression. This is for everyone: students, industry people and researchers. Book gives complete step by step process of designing flyback, forward, switching losses, conduction losses. One complaint I have with the author: Why didn't you describe the LLC resonant converter design which is the widely used converter?( the name of the book is switch mode which does not involve soft switching)
