Excellent IR testing source

This book is the ultimate guide for Infrared Testing. The author is a leading authority in the field and extremely knowledgeable of IR testing. He has presented this in a format that is as close to "hands on" as you can get from a book. I have purchased this book for new hires and experienced physicists alike. The book works not only as an intro but is very valuable as a reference guide. It is written in an easy to understand format and will not overwelm you with excessive math. I find this book extremely valuable in the field.

This book covers a good amount of background theory as well as practical examples. I would recommend to anyone involved with infrared detector characterization or calibration. Examples given lead you to accurate prediction of your system that you already have or something that you are currently designing on. Good balance of theory and practical knowledge.

Okay book but beware of print flaws

A fairly good book. It could use a little more technical detail. It may work best for you probably as a second book. Book is pricy considering the amount of content. In the edition I received there are numerous printing flaws, missing portions of text, etc..

"An American Prayer" vs. "American Prayer" Sanitized

"AN AMERICAN PRAYER" was published privately by Jim Morrison in the summer of 1970 as a limited edition of 500 red leather-bound, cover gilded with title & author "JIM MORRISON", by Western Lithographers (of Los Angeles) copyright 1970 James Douglas Morrison. Jim had recited this publicly in Spring 1969 at poetry readings with his friend who encouraged publishing his works privately, beat poet Michael McClure. The long-form poem first appeared in print as an untitled poem at the conclusion of Jerry Hopkins' Rolling Stone interview of Morrison in Issue #38 July 26, 1969 - Jim's private edition a year later was almost identical. On his last birthday, Dec 8, 1970, Jim recorded three hours of his poetry with friends Frank & Kathy Lisciandro, Alan Ronay, a swedish girl, and a fifth of Irish whiskey presented to Jim by studio engineer John Haeny as a birthday gift. "An American Prayer" was among the selections Jim read from neatly typed pages he brought to the session. This recording headlined the posthumous 1978 LP album of the same name, credited to "Jim Morrison, Music By The Doors", along with other recordings from that night as well as another recording session in Mar '69. The CD was released by Elektra in 1995 with a few bonus tracks and a front-cover insert booklet that was a reprint in miniature of the 8-page libretto that graced early editions of the LP - the booklet is illustrated with photos and drawings by Jim, and concludes with the complete lyrics of the recorded "An American Prayer" which is more than 90% of Jim's privately published book with all its primal, albeit crude, imagery intact. The typeset and format is identical to the stanzas printed by Jim. If Elektra had the b*lls to publish Jim's words as written and spoken by him, then Zeppelin Publishing Company did not even have the cahonies - therefore only a 4-star rating from this reviewer.

"A B of A Company, Louisiana, Baton Rouge", Zeppelin published two editions Copyright 1984, one titled on the spine and the cover "AMERICAN PRAYER" JIM MORRISON - illustrated against a red background with what appears to be a landing eagle about to perch on a muscled adonis statue posed with its back to the viewer (The same illustration appears on the cover of another Zeppelin publication "Light My Fire"). The other edition has a white cover with only the printing "Jim Morrison's AN AMERICAN PRAYER" and the "Zeppelin...Rouge" inscription at the bottom. Both versions have the same ISBN 0-915628-46-5 identified here on Amazon.com. Interestingly a Publisher's Note inside begins "This is a collector's book", suggesting the optimal state of mind, reading methodology, and reader motivation, then closes with "It is a good book", followed by "COPYRIGHT 1984 The B of A Company as Trustee for the various Copyright interests: Jim Morrison, The Estate of Pamela Coursen (misspelled, should be Courson), Zeppelin Publishing Company, and others. The book has every left page fully illustrated with art and photos (even the closeted Jim Morrison TV picture from the Prayer LP inside gatefold) that often complement the stanza printed on the facing right page. The poetry is pretty much true to Jim's original except for a few harmless word omissions or preposition swaps, but there are a couple glaring edits that can only be interpreted as sanitizing censorship that must have registered on the Richter Scale near Pere Lachaise cemetary in Paris when first published. Below are the 'edits' and the (original):

Words you know.

It is a short book, but the words are as powerful as you know them to be. His words don't define an era. They define a creed. A creed so strong that his albums sell more now than when they were released. His desparity his yurn for people to see the truth as he saw it. I can find myself. I can find myself in the choas of this world through his work. I like this book and his others. Great reading. I am surprised amazon could find it.

You should anotate that this joker out of Louisiana is NOT theJim Morrison from the Doors. He claims he is channeling Jim's words.He's just ripping people off. His publisher is B of A something or other, but it's a scam. Anyway, thanks for the time.

One of the Best Introductory Works on Reformed Soteriology

This book was an excellent introductory work on Reformed soteriology (doctrine of salvation). Hoekema takes the reader through every important issue on the subject ranging from regeneration and glorification to the ordo salutis and Union with Christ. This reader, though not as consistently Reformed as the author, truly appreciated the generous interaction with other Reformed writers (especially in the Dutch Reformed tradition) and the even-handedness the author maintained throughout this work.

In my experiences with Reformed teaching (simplified down at times to the "Doctrines of Grace") I've learned to expect a rigorous and detailed handling of God's plan in human salvation. This book does not fail to deliver in any of these aspects. Whereas some Reformed theologians seem to emphasize certain areas of Reformed soteriology which at times seem out of balance (such as Berkhof's understanding of our "Union with Christ" to be actualized already prior to regeneration), Hoekema gives a more balanced, and in my opinion, biblical treatment of difficult areas such as the ordo salutis and "Union with Christ." He interacts generously with John Murray, Louis Berkhof (his mentor), Herman Bavinck, and G.C. Berkhouwer in these difficult areas. He sums it up well by saying how important it is that we maintain both firmly, which I would agree fully.

Throughout every important area of our salvation/redemption Hoekema gives detailed biblical support for his classical Reformed views. This reader appreciated how every area was brought into the light of scripture in a detailed and thorough manner. Also, one peripheral area I felt encouraged by was his understanding of regeneration and his refutation of the common misunderstanding that one can be regenerate for a long period of time yet not come to faith for a period of months, maybe even years. I felt his critique of Kuyper and Berkhof in certain places was well warranted and appreciated the willingness of the author to disagree in some of the areas within his own Dutch Reformed tradition (especially in the area of "actualization" in justification and eternal life). Though I wasn't always convinced of his exegesis, I felt extremely encouraged and nourished by his understanding of many biblical truths.

In closing, this book is only an "introductory work" for those who may have already read a handful of books on Reformed soteriology. The book is not overly-technical by any means yet displays a lucid clarity and simplicity that allows any reader to engage with what the author is saying. I highly recommend this book for pastors, laymen, and students of the bible. This is a high-quality book from a consistently Reformed perspective concerning God's salvation and man's redemption. An excellent read.

Salvation thoroughly explained

I can't begin to tell you how helpful I found and will continue to find this book. It delves deep into the Bible to explain all the ins and outs of God's saving people from their sins. Hoekema interacts with church history, contemporary theology, popluar teaching across denominations, as well as classical, medieval, and reformation era theologians on the subject of salvation. This book is thorough yet readable. It is not for a new Christian, but if you want to go beyond the basics this is the book for you.

Great Book on Soteriology

This book is a very good outline of soteriology from the Reformed perspective. Anyone who wants to get a good dose of the doctrine of salvation from a traditional Reformed perspective should read this. Though it gets into technicalities and some Greek it is readable and organized. However, Hoekema's "Dutch Reformed" background lets some of his interpretations be influenced by that background. For example, his interpretation of Romans 7. For students wanting to understand what the Reformed camp teaches regarding salvation this book is for you.

Great beginnings

I was really not disappointed by this book, which is the first one published by the author.

The characters were all very touching and made so very human. It is, I think, a great feat to give a plausible personality, dreams and fears to what is known by the general public as only a name, vaguely associated with a period.

The story of William the Conqueror is a lively one, full of treachery and ambition, peace treaties and bloody battlefields, and is told in a very gripping way by the author, with different point of views so as to have the best idea of the situation on every sides. What I really liked was the realism of the novel, the humanity of the characters, the exactitude of the places, habits and every other details making it a very believable version of what really happened. It is clearly a work based on extensive research, and I enjoyed picturing so vividly those names that I learnt at school.

The beginning can seem a little daunting with a lot of names and relationships to remember, but as the story moves on, it all comes naturally.

I really can't wait for the sequel, and I recommend this series for anyone interested in history and great storytelling.

It's obvious that the author was mindful of staying true to her characters and to historical accuracy. This is a book I will be reading again and again, as I will future books of hers. Very well done!

Excellent male characterizations

The author creates a believable, even pitiable character in William. We can only imagine what it was like to be essentially orphaned in the eleventh century. This is the first book I've ever read which contains two -- count 'em -- two, sex scenes written from the point of view of a male virgin. These were well done, not crass at all, although, sigh, I hate to say it, the book's female characters are a bit flat -- even Matilda, who desires to be a "full-fledged" wife to William. At first I thought the author is male, but apparently not. We shall see how the women develop in book two. But don't let this put anyone off. The male characters are excellently drawn and it's not all sword fights -- plenty of sensitive moments between the men as well, but also plenty of bloodshed. Something else I enjoyed - the mention of the Scottish king Duncan, he of Macbeth/Shakespearian fame. Really a good book, and I hope this book gets more positive reviews and publicity. There aren't too many novels out about William the Conqueror, and I am enjoying this one.
It's obviously well researched and again, very enjoyable.
