This book on influence and leadership can help build your CAD management skills.
I don't often recommend books, but when I find one that has a strong value for CAD managers, I want to share it. I think Influence and Leadership: Building Rapport in Teams by Michael Nir fits the bill nicely.

Nir focuses on building teams, communicating, and getting buy-in fromthose in your organization that you hope to lead. Since that is verymuch what CAD managers do, I've found this book to be an interestingread.

Nir's style is concise, approachable, and at no time dictatorial. After you read through his approach to get people thinking without feelingthat they've been unduly influenced, you'll realize that his book doesthis exact same thing!

If you're open to reading a book on management theory, I recommend this one highly.

Another hit from Michael Nir

There is something about the many publications that Michael Nir produces that makes him a sure fire winner to read. Among those qualities is his ability to offer brief but succinct information in a warm, caring, entertaining manner, words that can be read quickly the first time around and then always be there for reference point then conditions call for a refresher course.

In INFLUENCE AND LEADERSHIP he addresses how to be an influential leader. Some of the areas he addresses include being likeable, how to use power, being aware of the variety of stakeholders (high power high interest stakeholders - manage closely, high power low interest stakeholders - keep satisfied, low power high interest stake holders - keep informed, low power low interest stakeholders - monitor with minimal effort), styles of leadership and how to make your chosen style work for you, and communication style - perhaps e most helpful section in the book.

Nir weaves his important points into a tapestry of his own experiences, making the ideas credible and accessible, and he keeps that warm feeling of caring about how we are progressing in our search for self-improvement active and productive. Though his books are brief, they are rich in information and will become necessary additions to the desk drawer library of resources when questions arise - as they always will. Highly recommended. Leaders' Essential Communication Skills Guide

Michael Nir has written a very good primer on communication skills for leaders and managers. I enjoyed his analogy to backpacking in Denali National Park, which I have personally visited. He has a dry sense of humor with lines like "...the natural urge to pet [bears] is highly inadvisable. I liked his focus on personal informal power with spot on tips for communication styles to affect greater informal power. He makes a valid point that most organizations go to an extreme level to avoid using the "liking" influencing strategy. The result is a dead organization devoid of acknowledgement and recognition. The end product is a group of cohorts that avoid liking each other and many times don't. Michael's greatest contribution in this book is the inventory of 20 leading characteristics found in global business leaders. I wonder if we should do more screening for these indicators like fairness, vision, humility, trust and the others. All in all, a good, quick read to help leaders and managers with communication skills development.

a superb text!

This book is a strong resource for any clinician dealing with language disorders. It clearly outlines intervention, assessment, different disorders etc. It covers a lot of material, but manages not to feel dense. It also provides tons of ideas for therapy... lists of children's books categorized by what therapy goal addresses (e.g. pronouns)... sample activities etc. Paul does a nice job of summarizing the current research and its implications for the clinician. I honestly don't know how I would have survived my first preschool placement without this book. Whenever I was stumped, this is where I turned. This is the type of book that you never get around to putting back on the shelf for you are always using it. Plus, as an added bonus it reads very well, more like a story than a text.

User-friendly guide for beginning clinicians

After repeatedly checking this book out from the library, I bought my own copy. I found the organization of assessment and treatment by age group to be helpful, and the wealth of non-standardized testing methods both appropriate and easy to implement. As the author says, it is designed for the beginning clinician and provides a worthwhile resource for anyone working with children. Though it does provide theoretical discussion, it is primarily a "hands-on" book. I would recommend this book as a primary text, a supplemental text, or a resource for SLPs who are updating their knowledge and practice in child language.

Dr. David Nunan is Director of the English Centre and Chair Professor of Applied Linguistics, University of Hong Kong. He is well known for his innovative methodology and his remarkable ability to bring to the classroom a variety of activities that will enhance students' oral production. Foundational Information

This text presents a wonderful foundation of information that summarizes and hits the main points of each of the basic topics pertinent to teaching ESL. It is an amazing resource for students who are just starting their study of ESL teaching and a great refresher/review for teachers who have been teaching for a while.

Speaking English isn't the same as teaching English!

I've spent many years in foreign countries- traveling, studying, working, living... I've even had an opportunity to teach English here and there, though I would not count myself a long term or "professional" English teacher. For the less initiated, this is a good type of book to start with. I read it as part of a short course on how to teach English to foreigners. The funny thing I learned from even that short experience was that being a native speaker of English, and I'd say a pretty articulate one at that, does not really "translate" into being able to teach the language to others! Teaching a language is its own skill, totally apart and separate from understanding and using it deftly. I was never quite able to justify a several thousand dollar TOEFL course or something like that as I didn't see myself doing a lot of English teaching. That would probably be a worthwhile investment for someone looking to really support themselves overseas (or for that matter, here in the US) teaching English to non-speakers. That said, from having traveled the world extensively for lengthy periods I would say that native English speakers always seem to be in fairly high demand, even without teaching experience. Being able to "self-educate" on how to teach English- using books like this and reference materials you could find online, etc., might be enough to jumpstart a mini-career in English teaching, or at least open the door enough to try it out and figure out if its your thing, if you want to invest more into it with a formal course and make it a career, etc. Also along those lines, it is much easier to teach advance students of English than beginners, as your classes will be more around conversation and correcting common mistakes made, etc., and not about teaching the basic grammatical building blocks of the language. The types of rules we native speakers learn in grade school and internalize, and notice instantly when something strikes our ear as "wrong", but don't necessarily "know" or remember the specific rules that are associated with them in order to teach them to others. If you are thinking about dipping your toe in the English teaching market, read a few books like this one, talk to people who have done it, take a class if you have the time/can afford it, avail yourself of all of the free online materials, and then just give it a shot! Maybe you can find a local place to tutor foreigners here in the States before taking off on an extended trip abroad where you might be looking to supplement your income/defray travel expenses by teaching English. Your confidence will expand by leaps and bounds with a little bit of real world experience, and soon you'll realize that you can take on your own students and plan lessons, etc., especially for the (perhaps counter-intuitively) easier students, who are the more advanced ones. About the Author

Ken Howard studied at Hornsey School of Art from 1949 to 1953 and at the Royal College of Art, London, from 1955 to 1958. He was elected Royal Academician in 1991.

More a collection of memories, than a life story

Ken Howard is one of my favourite painters, and every summer when I am in London I never fail to attend the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition to see the works he has entered. His use of light is absolutely magical. This autobiography gives the reader a sense of the man as opposed to the renowned painter. It illustrates the struggle a creative person faces when trying to focus and excel in a chosen art form, while at the same time trying to find a balance between the creative and interpersonal sides of life. Often a very steep price is paid as in the case of Mr. Howard's first marriage. The writing style is quite unsophisticated - more snippets of memory than a continuous story, and at times it becomes a little frustrating when the recollection of something is suddenly ended and he moves onto an unrelated topic. I would have liked him to write more about his work and how he has seen it evolve and develop. However, I am glad of the opportunity to get to "know" Ken Howard a little more.
