Installations

In American homes, multiscreen shoji installations are usually located in areas otherwise occupied by curtains, drapes, and blinds (that is, in front of windows and patio doors), in pass-throughs connecting rooms within the home, or in front of closets and other storage areas. A screen less than 24" wide looks cramped and is too narrow to be practical as a doorway; in a multiscreen installation it would require you to move more than one screen each time you wanted to pass through. Beyond 40", a screen can become too heavy to support its own weight without some kind of structural reinforcement like enlarged rails at top and bottom. Three parallel tracks for sliding the shoji is plenty for most installations, although you can use more if the opening is deep enough. You need 1/8" to 1/4" clearance between screens in their tracks.

Types of Shoji Installations

There are many different ways to install shoji in your home. When designing your shoji, think carefully about traffic patterns and who will be opening and closing the screens. Remember that being able to move the shoji gives you control over light and view. Design your screens to maximize both.

1. Sliding. This is the traditional Japanese method. The rails of the shoji are rabeted to form ridges that fit into tracks (dados) at top and bottom. Rabeting enables the screens to have a minimum of passing clearance without reducing the amount of wood between the dados. The lower track groove is shallower (1/8" is enough) than the top and supports the entire weight of the screen as it moves. The upper track groove, at least twice the depth of the lower to allow easy removal, serves only to keep the screen vertical. Because the entire screen is supported from below, and not from the side as with a Western-style hinged door, the frame needs only a minimum of structural reinforcement.
A modern alternative to this sliding mode calls for a wheel in a housing to be mortised into the bottom rail of the shoji. The groove in the wheel runs on a metal track that is mounted on the floor or threshold. An omnidirectional caster can also be used in an inlaid hardwood track. The rolling action of the wheel or caster eliminates the friction of wood-to-wood contact in the bottom track. Such an installation is suited to very large panels and to panels that contain glass, thick plastic sheeting, or other heavy materials. It also works well in high-traffic areas where the screens have to operate quickly. The top is a simple tenon/rabet and dado.
2. Hanging. With most sliding screens, the tops of the bottom tracks are made level with the flooring so that people don't trip as they pass through the opening. If the screens are added later or are installed in a carpeted area, it may not be possible to inlay the tracks. Instead, the screens can be fitted with a roller device at the top and suspended from an upper track.

Most hardware stores stock a variety of tracking devices and guides that help prevent the screens from swinging as they move. Many systems use adjusting screws to make the screens plumb. Unfortunately, these devices are often unattractive. Hide them from sight by a valance or other device (see part 4). Rollers and other mechanical devices can also be quite noisy, and this might destroy the tranquil mood you have labored to create with the shoji in the first place.

3. Bifold (hinged). Although hinges are rarely used with shoji in Japan, they make sense in many American homes. Used with a swivel roller at the top of the screen, hinges allow several screens to operate in a single track, making installation possible in long but shallow openings. Because the screens are stored perpendicular to the track, edge-on to the viewer, the opening is obscured much less than with conventional sliding panels. Unlike sliding screens, hinged screens have a tendency to sag and may need to be stabilized along the diagonal with hipboards or thickened rails.
4. Freestanding. Single screens are often used as partial, stationary partitions without tracking systems. They can rest in a stand that can be moved about the room, or they can be attached to a wall, floor, or ceiling. Two or more screens can also be attached at their sides and arranged in a zigzag to make them stand on their own. Since the weight of each screen rests on the bottom, lateral shear here is not a structural concern as it is with hinged screens. Freestanding screens have a decorative, sculptural value and make versatile room dividers that give privacy without cutting off light or closing you in. See part 4 for examples.

Not traditional japanese woodwork, but who cares?

JVA uses a simplified approach to building shoji. Odate's book is the one for you if you want to build an authentic shoji using Japanese technique. Having said that, this is an EXCELLENT primer on shoji measurement and building practice for quick screens. I have built screens in both styles and take my word for it that JVA's method is quicker and no-one can tell the difference. Two things: the screen on the cover is NOT the one detailed in the text (check the corners). Also, I would HIGHLY recommend cutting your stiles long (leave a horn) and trimming them off post assembly with the table saw followed by a pass with a plane. Buy it and get building!

Making shoji is not for those who have no woodworking skills, but if you can make basic joints, this book will provide instructions and inspiration onmaking beautiful shoji. If you're not interested in making shoji, it still provides design inspiration. At a current quoted cost of $29/sq. foot for Shoji, learning how-to could be profitable!

A woodworkers guide to shoji for your home

Shoji are really beautiful. There is something wonderful about the light passing through the semi-translucent rice paper, creating an atmosphere that is romantic and relaxing. Having lived in Japanese houses for several years, it was something that I wanted to recreate when I returned to the US.

"Shoji: How to design, build, and install Japanese Screens" was exactly the book I was looking for. Jay van Arsdale has written a simply, comprehensive guide on how to add shoji to an existing house, from very simple screens to much more complicated structures. Its a modern approach to making shoji, rather than bothering with traditional Japanese methods, and is very practical and doable.

The book assumes that you have woodworking skills and tools, and isn't so much a "Beginner's Guide." He gives a list of tools that you will need, mainly a set of chisels, hammers, saws, polishing stones and planes. He does recommend that you invest in Japanese tools, as they are made differently from Western tools and will create a different look in the wood that will be more authentic and aesthetically pleasing. There are a few specialty chisels, specifically the yarinomi and the sokosarae, that will make your shoji-making much more efficient.

The different styles of shoji in the book range from simple shoji, to glass-panel shoji, closet and cabinet screens and lanterns. For the truly ambitious there are instructions for ceiling fixtures and skylights as well as valances and hanging screens. Most of those projects are far removed from my abilities, but a more advanced woodworker will find some inspiring projects.

The photos are all in black-and-white, but there are some beautiful homes on display showing you what you can do with shoji screens. Certainly not everyone has the time and money for that kind of home transfiguration, but it is nice to dream.

Oh, Betty, What Has She Done?

In her latest novel, set in present-day Maine, Janet Chapman allows gentle suspense to flicker. The good news? THE SEDUCTION OF HIS WIFE has some VERY entertaining moments. The bad news? It clearly illustrates The Women's Movement in reverse.

In 1963, Betty Friedan's "The Feminine Mystique" was published. The book's thesis was that women were victims of a pervasive system of delusions and false values that urged them to find their fulfillment and identity vicariously, through their husbands and children. So . . . say hello to Janet Chapman's heroine: Sarah Banks.

Although, Chapman's heroine is basically likable and very sweet, sometimes Sarah Banks' actions border on idiotic. This little domestic queen cooks, cleans, sews, quilts, gathers potpourri pine twigs, and worries excessively over a roasting pan dent. And . . . groan . . . she can't drive a vehicle to save her life. Groan . . . again . . . with her looks, who cares?
Alex Knight and Sarah were married by proxy. Three days later they declared Alex dead. Or so the story went! Alex's father had concocted the idea. He sipped his drink, leaned back, and looked around. New curtains hung on his spotless windows, his chairs had been re-upholstered, and the usual chaotic disorder was gone. He had a wife! A curvy, gorgeous wife! And his entire family adored her!

In THE SEDUCTION OF HIS WIFE, things start with much promise, move with great humor, and finish with dopey outlandishness. Now, don't get me wrong, Janet Chapman can definitely write. And there are some really nice moments in this story. And ultimately, THE SEDUCTION OF HIS WIFE is a fun read. However, women have come a LONG way, and to have a modern day heroine, act as sharp as a marble, well . . . it seemed TOO hard to take! Ok, ok, if one can forget Betty Friedan's teachings, then THE SEDUCTION OF HIS WIFE shouldn't disappoint . . . TOO MUCH!

Good light read with a likable hero and some mystery and danger

An appealing hero carries the day in this pleasant read about an initially resistant couple, scarred by disastrous first marriages, that steadily grows to admire and care for one another. Widower Alex Knight is reported killed while working in South America. Before his death becomes public, his dad arranges for a proxy wedding between Alex and his children's beloved (and beautiful) widowed housekeeper, Sarah Banks, who then immediately adopts the two children. This is all done so that the kids cannot be taken by their undesirable maternal grandparents. Alex and Sarah have never met one another, so things become quite sticky when - just a week later - Alex shows up at the family logging homestead very much alive. The couple gets off to rocky start, for both are mistrustful of the opposite sex. However, they agree to stay "married" for a while so that there will be no legal troubles. Can they let go of their pasts and begin anew with one another?

Although this story had more potential than it realized, it was a good fast read. I liked the mystery element and the backdrop of increasingly threatening events on the Knight's land and logging operations. I felt that Alex was a treasure - sweet yet utterly masculine. Sarah was a little too hesitant about everything, and her continuing resist Alex physically seemed odd after a while. Nevertheless, they seemed good for each other, and I never stopped rooting for them to succeed. I enjoyed the occasional encouragement and ribbing of the couple by Alex's dad and children, but felt that more interplay like this was needed. There clearly were conversations begging to be had by the seven people, including his two younger brothers, all living under one roof. The Knights are an intriguing family, and I hope to learn more about them in future books in the series.

This is a great book and I love the connection between the heroine, Sarah, and her husband Alex and his children. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the author's overdone references to her own book. While referencing the books is a great idea in theory (Sarah is an avid reader of romance novels and wants to be more like the characters and Alex reads some of the books and they read some together), the cut passages (some of which covered more than a page) were too much.

The plot of the book is a fun one. Alex is presumed dead, so his scheming father marries him by proxy to the housekeeper so that the family can keep custody of Alex's children. It is the perfect solution for Sarah who loves children but, after being widowed from a loveless and sexless marriage, does not want a husband.

Alex and Sarah's relationship gets off to a bad start at their first meeting and Alex spends the rest of the book trying to win her over. This is a great book and a fun summer read.

Handbook Indeed. Rock on Janette!

The book lives up to its title. This book should be distributed to every civic leader in a community with > 100,000 people to sensitize them to current thinking. Provides many of the counter-arguments used by inertial (politicians/engineers), fearful (politicians/engineers) and angry (drivers) opposition to livable streetscapes. Easily the best book on this subject ever written, familiar and astute as the author is in the ways and interfaces between end-users, planners, designers, funding sources, election cycles and other political shenanigans. What a wonderful team she and Mr. Bloomberg made. I love the quote cited early in the book, "To plan is human, to implement, divine." Advocates of change should closely read this book to learn what hidden obstacles lay in their path and that are often kept concealed by city administrators to keep things in the indefinite "planning" phase so many municipalities find themselves in. One of the most profound insights is that waiting to build deep consensus is almost always going to result in retaining the status quo. Politicians disinclined to action or any thing that costs a dime will, as a result, advocate cost free and wheel-spinning studies. The author was fortunate in having a strong, forward-thinking mayor and deputy mayor. This makes many of the actions described less-applicable to the rest of us facing either lukewarm support or downright opposition from leadership (surely the most common situation in the US). The book gives hope, though, and provides enough nuts-and-bolts information to be applicable to any community..., acceptance of this vision is remote in red-state and purple america, but if it can be done in NYC...,

The more things change . . .

Janette Sadik Kahn was Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Transportation Commissioner between 2006 and the end of Bloomberg's term in 2013. She was best known for throwing out the accepted engineering manuals, the "Manual of Traffic Control Devices" and the "Policy on the Geometric Design of Streets and Highways," (the Greenbook) both developed over the decades for rural highways. She also helped form the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) as an alternative to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). AASHTO is the publisher of the Greenback, and as the name suggests, is comprised of state department of of highway officials. The system was structured that way in 1921: the feds tell the state DOTs what to do, and the states tell the cities what to do. The system was predicated on the assumption that city administrations were (and are) too incompetent and corrupt to run their own affairs. On the other hand, most state DOTs carry an implicit (and often explicit) bias: from a transport point of view, cities are irrational. They should go away. The job of the transportation planner and engineer to assist in that process. Suburbs are okay, but only a half-way measure. Total dispersal is the goal.

The book is mostly a memoir, and a pretty good one. It's also a fairly good introduction to the philosophy behind the two NACTO guides, for bikes and for livable streets. My biggest complaint are the selective omissions. Khan, in the introduction, corrects a Bloomberg aide who describes the position as "traffic commissioner." "I'm the transportation commissioner," she corrects. Well, not so fast. At this time, NYC was embarking on the biggest transit project since BART, 45 years ago: the 2nd Avenue Subway Line. Not a word about it. Why? "Transportation Commissioner" doesn't run transit in NYC. Not surprising: not even Robert Moses was bold enough to take on NY Transit. And that still leaves out PATH, Long Island RR and the suburban bus lines (16?). Not mentioned is the fact that NY Transit is the largest bus system in North America without a single bike-on-bus rack. That's why she only talks about bus rapid transit: her definition of BRT is limited to the modified rights-of-way, not the bus operations. Go talk to transit about that.

Similarly, her much heralded "pocket parks" in odd-shaped intersection triangles were found through an inventory of sites to store snowstorm salt. There were some high profile exceptions (Times Square, the Flatiron Bldg.) but most were in old industrial/warehouse neighborhoods. Her "blitz 'em overnight" tactics worked because the building occupants were tenants, not owners, and didn't really care, except for the lost parking, which was often mitigated. When the condo boys move in, those odd lots will disappear or become walled off plazas.

If you are mostly interested in the bikey stuff, great. But if you want some perspective, I highly recommend a 1965 book by Henry Barnes called "The Man With Red and Greens Eyes." A small-town engineer from the sticks who works his way up to public works director in Denver gets the attention of the New York City Mayor in 1959, and is hired as traffic director to everyone's surprise: "who he?" He discovers a traffic nightmare. Resisting the calls of the daily newspapers to do something drastic, Barnes implements a series of odd-ball, cutting edge improvement, we would today call TSM. He makes every east-west street one way. He allows left turns only on signals. He installs the "Barns Dance," an all-red traffic signal phase just for pedestrians, letting them even cross diagonally. Oh, and the biggest single thing: "The first thing I did is get rid of those Godawful trolley buses and replace them with modern diesel buses." The more things change, the more they stay the same. Sorta.

Fantastic book about reclaiming our streets from being dominated so long by King Car and its many minions. This book has the problem(s) of 100 years of auto centric city planning clearly laid out but has easy to implement solutions to grab back our cities from Car dominance as well. The book is eminently readable as she shares true life experiences through wonderful story telling. A must read for everyone interested in the vitality and livability of cities.

an absolute must- read for anyone thinking about law school

The best thing about this balanced, comprehensive review of law school is that it does not assume that everyone should go to law school. It provides a detailed description about what a law studen'ts life is like and carefully lays out both the costs and benefits of getting a law degree. Those who are dead-set on going to law school might want to skip ahead to the sections on applying, but anyone who is even mildly curious about what law school is like would benefit from the authors' depictions. The book also provides sound advice on deciding where, when, and how to apply; the calendar in the back is especially helpful. Although those who, like me, have already graduated college may find some of the advice on how to choose a major a little belated, the book does its best to be relevant to both younger and older students and doesn't make any assumptions about financial resources or academic qualifications, either. All in all, this book is a well- written primer for anyone thinking of becoming a lawyer.

AMAZING and POWERFUL information. I have been doing healing work with Carol and as a result I am system free of Ulcerative Colitis and Grief.
Now there is finally tools to invest in myself to continue the healing and a deeper understanding of the Life Weaving healing. In this pioneering work, Roby traces the Mizrahi population's struggle for equality and civil rights in Israel. Although the daily "bread and work" demonstrations are considered the first political expression of the Mizrahim, Roby demonstrates the myriad ways in which they agitated for change. Drawing upon a wealth of archival sources, many only recently declassified, Roby details the activities of the highly ideological and politicized young Israel. Police reports, court transcripts, and protester accounts document a diverse range of resistance tactics, including sit-ins, tent protests, and hunger strikes. Roby shows how the Mizrahi intellectuals and activists in the 1960s began to take note of the American civil rights movement, gaining inspiration from its development and drawing parallels between their experience and that of other marginalized ethnic groups. The Mizrahi Era of Rebellion shines a light on a largely forgotten part of Israeli social history, one that profoundly shaped the way Jews from African and Asian countries engaged with the newly founded state of Israel.
